I already have 2 baby hermans about 2 years old in a viv , but i really want a adult hermann. I just dont know what to keep it in. I dont want it outside at the moment as its freezing and has been snowing.
what do you keep them in inside. I dont have alot of room for a big tortoise table or something. Please Help- ThanksTortoise Help !!!!! Advice?
I suggest that since you don't have room, just wait until your two babies grow..
There's nothing more stressful and irritating than living in something too small for a tortoise.
Or, you could wait untl it gets sunny outside and buy an adult one.
But then you have to remember, winter will come back again, and you will need room for an adult tortoise.
I personally don't put a place for my tortoise during the winter, I put them just inside and they pick where they want to go. They're pretty clean, but mine hibernate so yours might not.
But either way, your babies will turn into adults and you'll eventually need to find room for a big tortoise cage.Tortoise Help !!!!! Advice?
you really need space for tortoises, and since you have said you don't have room for a big table then i would stick to the two you have, your tortoises will be adults in about 5 years so you will ge the adult tortoise you want, but you have to be patient, these tortoises will be with you for the next 50 years at least so there is plenty of time to get what you want.
An adult herman needs a tortoise table which is 2ft by 4ft, tanks are not good for them, they are more geared to height rather than floor space and do not allow enough air flow in so can get a bit damp or too dusty, tortoises need plenty of space and a good air flow to stay healthy, pour all your love and care into the two tortoises you have and wait until you have enough room for another tortoise, best of luck honey
do you have a closet? some people turn there closet into a place to house ther e tortoise or snakes
Im sorry to say this but A vivarium is really bad for the majority of tortoise species..im sure you were talked into buying one of these by a pet shop or garden centre but all they were interested in was your cash ..and not the welfare of your torts.
Vivariums have glass fronts which frustrate and stress out tortoises as they can see through it but an not get through it....a little like Lions you used to see on the news walking the fences at zoos through stress and boredom.
Also many vivariums are closed in units meaning tht they have a roof on which means that the temp inside the viv does not allow for thermoregulation....basic terms means your torts can not cool down or heat up....they end up being the same temp were ever they go in the viv....which can cause loads of health problems in the long run.
Tortoise like Hermanns should live to around 120 years old ...realisticly a tort kept in a viv will eventually get a respiratory problem and will be dead or seriously ill by the age of about 10..if it survives that long.
there is hope...you can modify your viv to make it more friendly to your torts relatively easy....and cheaply for help with this and much more help and advice please get in contact with me.
I keep hermanns also....I currently have 16 but the numbers are rising as I also breed hermanns too!
I have a group deddicated to helping tortoise owners on yahoo called TORTOISE-HEALTH please try and find us and join we would be very pleased to have you on board!!
