Best advice I can give you:
Ask for a pain medication such as Vicodan. Fill the prescription ASAP and take a pill before the numbness even wears off from your surgery. That way, the pain will be much less when the numbing shot wears off.
Keep ice packets on your face for 15 minutes at a time, with 15-20 minute breaks, for at least 6 hours after wards.
After surgery DO NOT spit or suck through a straw for several days. This is how dry socket occurs. It is supposed to be a very PAINFUL condition. And if you smoke, DON'T for at least a day.
Stay away from solid foods for at least 8 hours. After that, make sure it's very soft foods like noodles, soup, milkshakes and so on. Try to keep food away from the wounds as much as possible.
Gargle with salt water 24 hours after surgery several times a day to promote healing.
I don't think you will feel like returning to work once your surgery is over with. Most likely you'll need to be on pain meds and they will cause drowsiness, and possibly make you feel lightheaded and dizzy.
Good luck! You'll do ok if you treat your mouth gently.Need your kind help/advice-impacted teeth?
ok the iv isnt bad, you will not be able to spit out the blood for the first day because if numbness, do not smoke of use a straw this will help not gerring dry socket which means u pull out the clot take whatever meds they give you for pain but try to eat with them keep ice on the area for a few days to hel with pain swelling no hot food for a few days, to gargle just put the solution in ur mouth and shake ur head back n forth, to be honest it is a bad operation very painful , miserable the first day but after that it is 100% better just sore not pain..
good luck
Good questions all around, your surgeon should be able to answer them all but sometimes it's helpful to hear that the same advice is universal!
1. The IV is what most people freak out about the most, but it is soooo much easier than they think it will be.
2. The assistant in the recovery room will go over the instructions with you and your designated ride (you probably won't remember most of it, but it is written down).
3. Sometimes a dry socket just cannot be avoided...women on birth control have a very high incidence of dry sockets, and smokers are also totally at risk. If you're neither, stay on cold, mushy food the first day, do not use straws, don't rinse or brush your teeth, keep steady biting pressure on the gauze until the bleeding basically stops (light pink saliva).
I'd love to go on, but I'm not sure I'll have enough room here!!
