I'm planning to adopt a 1 week old pigeon from a friend of mine in about a month or so, I've got an eyedropper, heating pad and online resources to help take care of it. I've also got a card board box for temporary housing. Does anyone have any advice on what I could be miissing? I know I've still got to get a few other things but for now I've got the basics.Got advice? please help!?
sounds like u are on the right track..when u get your bird after a small bit of time that goes by..u will know what else to get the bird by watching and being with himGot advice? please help!?
Are you going to eat it when it gets big enough? If not, why?
Why do you want a pigeon?
Go to pigeon-life.net and ask them, they are experts!
first of all, a pigeon will eat thru the cardboard box and escape, for his safety, get a 10 gallon aquarium and cover it with a piece of wood if u have no cover... put the heating pad under the glass bottom of the tank so it doesnt short out when he decides to dump over his water or wet his tank.
remember that a pigeon is a member of the poultry family and thus can carry salmonella- so you should be VERY careful about washing your hands after feeding it.
be sure to put an old towel (i mean one u are willing to throw away after he is raised- it will be trashed!) into his tank... also be careful not to overfeed him, birds have a ';crop'; which is very full and looks HORRIBLE when you have first finished feeding them... kind of like a tumor on their throat- but it will go down as they digest the food... too much food and they can aspirate and die of pneumonia
find a breeder in your area to answer questions for you on handfeeding, it is not an easy task
susan
try to make a small avairy, and buy some worms, mini size, meal worms
The thing is, I don't know much about keeping pets, but if the pigeon's very young, then it shouldn't be alone, I have enough experience with birds to say that, if it's young you should keep it along with its mother, and if it's big enough then it should have a partner, even when provided with everything, these birds sometimes die due to loneliness.
